Cardura XL Doxazosin Mesylate ER and/or alternatives
Cardura XL has Doxazosin as its active ingredient, and it falls under the group of drugs known as alpha adrenergic blockers. You can buy Cardura XL as 4mg and 8mg white colored extended release tablets. Apart from Doxazosin, the tablets also contain black iron oxide, pharmaceutical gaze, cellulose acetate, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, red ferric oxide, hypromellose, sodium chloride and polyethylene oxide. Do not use Cardura XL if you have an allergy to any of these ingredients.
Indications & Dosage of Cardura XL
Cardura XL is used for relieving symptoms of BPH or enlarged prostate, such as difficulty urinating, increased need to urinate at night, weak stream of urine or urgency or frequency of urination. The medicine works by relaxing the muscles of your prostate and bladder neck, so that urine can pass freely and the symptoms are relieved. Unlike Cardura, Cardura XL cannot be used for treating high blood pressure.
Initially, you will be advised to take Cardura XL 4mg per day, preferably with breakfast. Depending on your symptomatic response to the drug, you may be advised to take Cardura XL 8mg per day after around 3-4 weeks. If you discontinued the drug for several days, the treatment will need to start again with 4mg per day.
Swallow the tablets whole, without chewing, dividing, cutting or crushing them.
Side Effects & Interactions of Cardura XL
Runny nose, nausea, headache, tiredness, drowsiness or mild dizziness can be commonly experienced by patients taking Cardura XL tablets. Although these are temporary side effects of the drug and subside on their own as your body adjusts to it, you should seek medical attention without fail if any of these become intolerable.
You should also inform your doctor at once if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Symptoms of such side effects include pounding or fast heartbeat, difficulty breathing, fluttering in the chest, swelling on feet, ankles or hands, or painful erection for more than 4 hours.
Cardura XL is not meant to be used by patients who have an allergy to any of its active or inactive ingredients. If you are using the drug for the first time, keep a lookout for symptoms of an allergy, which include hives, swollen face or throat, dizziness and breathing difficulties. Discontinue using the medicine if you develop any of these symptoms.
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Cardura XL if you are already using any anticholinergics (e.g. benztropine or atropine) or drugs for treating any sexual function problems (e.g. vardenafil or sildenafil).
Warnings & Precautions of Cardura XL
Cardura XL is meant to be used only by men, and not by women. Inform your doctor beforehand if you have prostate cancer, heart disease (such as congestive heart failure, recent heart attack or angina), stomach or intestinal problem (such as chronic constipation, short bowel syndrome, slow gut movement or narrowing gut) or liver disease.
The drug makes you dizzy, so you should avoid doing activities that require complete alertness, such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine. Also limit alcoholic beverages during Cardura XL treatment, as it may worsen the side effect.
